Wathnan Racing’s Spiralizer made a notable debut at Churchill Downs Thursday with a two-length victory in a five-furlong maiden special weight against five other 2-year-olds.
Ridden by Tyler Gaffalione for trainer Steve Asmussen, the Florida-bred son of Twirling Candy led from the start and was a length clear of Hedge in second through a quarter mile in :22.86. He stretched his margin to two lengths around the turn and finished evenly while remaining two lengths clear of a late running Asleep At Eight in second in a final time of :58.48 on the fast track. Spiralizer is by Twirling Candy O/O Jotown by Speightstown.
